Setting Up Asset Types
Creating an asset type
- To create a new asset type you need to have ecosystem orchestrator permission
- However, to edit an existing asset type you need to have either asset type owner permission for the particular asset type, or ecosystem orchestrator permission
Asset types can be created by clicking the green button on the top right hand corner of the Assets page (note that if you don’t see this button it means that you don’t have ecosystem orchestrator permission):
From there you can either create a new asset type using the asset type builder or you can import assets from a csv and creating a new asset type in the process:
Asset type builder
Once you click Create Asset Type, you are redirected to the asset type builder. This functions almost identically to the workflow builder, where you drag and drop components into the builder and set up them to create a general form which can be used for all assets in this type.
To find out more about what each component does and how to set them up please see the components section of the knowledge base
When you are happy with how your asset type looks, click on the green publish button:
Your newly created asset type should now appear in the assets tab:
Importing assets
Clicking on Import Asset Type in the modal brings forth the import asset type modal. This is where you name the asset type and upload your spreadsheet to be used for import. Formatting for your spreadsheet goes as follows:
- Each column represents a different property
- Each row represents an asset being imported alongside the asset type
For example a spreadsheet to keep track of students could look like this:
Once you have uploaded your spreadsheet and named the asset type, click on Next. Doing so brings you to the property mapping step:
The select box under Identify asset name lets you select which property defines what each asset within the asset type is called. This affects what you see in the assets tab, as well as what you search for in the asset search component, so make sure to set this to a property that can easily differentiate an asset from others of the same type.
Under Set the type of the following properties, you can click on each select box to set the field type from the types provided to suit each property:
Once you are happy with the field types of each property, click Import. Once the import is complete and you confirm it, the new asset type will appear in your assets tab:
Additionally, an asset has been created for each row in the spreadsheet, with all information filled into the respective fields for you:
Editing an asset types
- To edit an existing asset type you need to have either asset type owner permission for the particular asset type, or ecosystem orchestrator permission
Regardless of how asset types have been created, they can always be edited in the builder. To edit an asset type, navigate to the assets tab and find the asset type you want to change. Click on the ellipsis and click on Edit asset type in the popup:
This opens up the asset builder where you make changes to the asset type:
Once you are happy with the changes, click Publish Updates and click Publish. The changes are immediately made to the asset type. Existing assets will retain their information and structure as it was before a change was made to the asset type, however editing the assets will cause them to follow the new structure.
Deleting an asset type
To delete an asset type, navigate to the assets tab and find the asset type you want to delete. Click on the ellipsis and click on Delete in the popup.
Adding parts to an asset type using the Advanced Editor
- In the left hand navigation panel you can click on ellipsis where you want to add a child and click on Add Child
- Through this method you can add in new components, relationships, data pipelines, and everything else that is available in the Advanced Editor
