Module 7: How to Create Asset Types and Assets
What Are Assets, and Why Are They Useful 🚚
Assets in Rise-X are persistent records that store key business data (e.g. vehicles, contracts, suppliers) as a single source of truth for workflows. Unlike workflows, assets do not have a fixed timeframe, making them perfect for tracking key resources, managing reference data, and ensuring seamless collaboration across stakeholders.
Two Ways to Create Asset Types and Assets 🤔
- Using the builder to create an asset type and then manually adding assets
- Using a CSV to create an asset type with assets already inside it. You can then also add assets manually after that.
What You Can Do with the Builder 🛠️
- Create asset types, defining what data you want to capture in each asset and the format of that data.
Additional functionality available in the UI
- Manage permissions to edit the asset type or create new assets.
How to Access the Builder 👷♂️
- Creating a new asset type using the “+ Create asset type” button in the top right of the Assets page enters you into the Builder.
- Creating a new workflow requires Ecosystem Orchestrator permission.
- Editing existing asset type by clicking on the ellipsis and then “Edit asset type” also takes you into the Builder.
- Editing an existing workflow requires Asset Type Owner permission.
Creating Asset Types Using the Builder 🧱
- Creating asset types using the builder is very similar to creating workflows using the builder which we learnt about in module 6.
- You can set up an asset type by dragging and dropping components from the left-hand panel into the main section in the middle.
- You can then configure these assets using the configuration panel on the right-hand side.
Importing Asset Types via CSV 📊
Step 1: Prepare Your Spreadsheet
- Each column represents a component (e.g., Country Name, Population (M), GDP (USD$B)).
- Each row represents an asset (e.g., "Germany, 84.48, 4456," "Spain, 48.37, 1581").
Step 2: Uploading to Rise-X
- Go to ”+ Create Asset Type” → ”Import Asset Type” → then follow the prompts to import the csv, name the asset type, map columns to component types and choose one of the columns to be the asset’s name.
Manually Creating and editing Assets 🏗️
Creating: Navigate to the asset type, then click ”+ New {asset type name}” → Fill in fields → Submit.
Editing: While inside the asset click on the pencil icon → Update fields → Submit.
5. Setting Up Permissions 🔐
- Asset Type Owners: Can edit the asset type. If they also have the company plan they can create new assets.
- You can manage this in the manage asset type settings under the “Owners” tab.
- Asset Viewers or Editors: Can view and/or edit the specific asset.
- In an asset click the share icon in the top right, select either viewer or editor, search for users via email, then send them an invite.
Key Takeaways 🔑
- Assets store persistent business data that workflows reference and update, ensuring a single source of truth.
- You can create asset types manually or via CSV to efficiently structure and manage data.
- The Builder allows easy asset type setup with drag-and-drop components and configuration options.
- Permissions ensure secure access, with different roles controlling who can edit or view assets.
